How to Transition to Freshpet Food

by Tori Holmes

Have you made the decision to switch your pet to fresh pet food? We’re so excited to have you and your pet join the Freshpet family! As much as you may want to start your pet on their Freshpet diet right away, it’s important to transition your pet to their new food slowly. If you cut out your pet’s current food cold turkey, there’s a good chance the change will be tough on their tummy.

To make the transition to Freshpet, we suggest making the change over the course of 7 to 10 days.

Day 1 – 3: For the first three days of transitioning your pet, meals should consist of approximately 75% of their current food and 25% Freshpet.

Day 3 – 6: At this point in the switch, your pet’s stomach is starting to become more comfortable with their new food. For the next few days, meals should consist of 50% current food and 50% Freshpet.

Day 7 – 10: By the end of the week, your pet has almost finished their transition to fresh pet food. From the 7 to 10 day mark, all meals should consist of 25% current food and 75% Freshpet.

After the 10-day transition period is over, you can retire your pet’s old food and begin serving exclusively Freshpet. Some dogs or cats will transition more quickly than others so keep that in mind. With their guidance, you will be able to determine a modified schedule to make the switch easier on your pet.

Once this switch is complete, it won’t be long until you start to notice the benefits of your four-legged friend’s new diet. You will see a shinier and softer coat, a more energetic pet, a diminishing of allergy and digestion problem, and the establishment of a healthy weight. If that wasn’t enough, just want until you see how excited they get at mealtime!
